Job Title: Switchgear Controls Engineer

Job Duties:

IEM Power Systems is engaged in the manufacture of electrical switchgear and the control thereof. The company is seeking to hire an individual to use standard occupational tools and advanced practical and theoretical knowledge of Electrical Engineering to perform the following job duties:

  • Design and develop unique custom switchgear utilizing industry switchgear design standards, such as UL67, UL891, UL1558, IEEE 1547, IEEE or ANSI C37.20 and NEC NFPA70.
  • Design and develop unique custom control gear utilizing communication protocols for multiple Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), protective relays, and third-party devices.
  • Prepare technical drawings, specifications and Bill of Material of electrical systems to ensure that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements.
  • Operate engineering and design software, including AutoCAD, The MathWorks MatLab, Power World, C, C++, Labview, and Windmill, to perform engineering tasks.
  • Confer with engineers, customers, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering projects or products.
  • Utilize knowledge of low and medium voltage switchgear protection schemes, including circuit breaker trip units, protective relays and ground fault schemes, multi-function engine and generator controllers, basic motor controls, and PLCs.
  • Utilize knowledge of generator controls, including stand-alone operation, multiple generators operating in parallel on an isolated bus, and generators operating in parallel with utility.
  • Direct and coordinate manufacturing, construction, installation, maintenance, support, documentation, or testing activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes or customer requirements.
  • Perform protection coordination studies.
  • Perform detailed calculations to compute and establish manufacturing, construction, or installation standards or specifications.
  • Prepare specifications for purchases of materials or equipment.
  • Perform additional duties that are normally associated with this position, as assigned.

Minimum requirements:

Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering specializing in Power Systems providing the required knowledge and abilities, plus 1 year of experience in jobs providing the required skills and abilities.

Demonstrable proficiency with the following tools, knowledge, technologies and procedures, acquired through employment and/or university coursework:

  • UL 891, IEEE1547, IEEE C57.13 and ANSI C37.2 design standards
  • engineering and design software such as, Cad, The MathWorks MatLab, Power World, C, C++, Labview, and Windmil
  • alternators, and paralleling of generators, including synchronizers and load share controllers such as SPMA and LS5 controllers
  • switchgear
  • PLC’s
  • protection coordination
  • writing technical documents

Any suitable combination of education, training or experience is acceptable. In this context, “suitable” means substantially compatible with stated academic level and experience requirements and ability to perform the job duties.

IEM Power Systems, located in Jacksonville, FL, is a subsidiary of Industrial Electric Mfg. (IEM), North America’s largest independent full-line manufacturer of electrical distribution and power quality equipment. IEM Power Systems designs and builds innovative power systems for critical applications where continuous and reliable power is required.

This position will be responsible for the in-house testing, verification and start-up in the field of a project which will include performing UL inspections, developing test procedures, performing set-up and dynamic adjustment of analog and digital governor systems, voltage regulator systems and engineer generator controllers. You will also perform modifications and repairs to existing systems.

Requirements: A minimum 5 years of experience with multiple/paralleling generator control system start-ups utilizing multi-function protection relays (Basler, GE or Schweitzer a plus) and multi-function engine controllers (Woodward & ComAp a plus). An AS Degree is preferred. Experience using several types of test equipment including Hi-Pot, Meggar, 3 Phase Relay Test Equipment, milliamp simulators and multimeters is also required. Strong computer skills – the ability to make changes in the field to HMI screen & PLC ladder logic programming – are highly desirable. A willingness to travel, a team player, strong communication skills and an ability to work independently without supervision are a must.

As an entry-level electrical design engineer, you will be trained in basic power and control design principles as they relate to electrical switchgear in order to support our efforts from our engineering branch in center city Portland. You will also support the efforts of our California production facility utilizing Bentley’s Promis-e software and AutoCAD. You will have the opportunity to remain a design engineer, or, if you enjoy travel and excel at field tasks, you may find yourself commissioning, troubleshooting and performing engineering surveys at diverse customer locations. Requirements: A minimum of 1 year hands-on engineering related experience is a must. A basic understanding of electrical engineering principles and a familiarity with Microsoft Office products is also required. An eagerness to learn, a positive attitude, attention to detail, pride in workmanship, a strong work ethic and the ability to work well within a team are necessary. Previous experience in the power industry would be a plus.

You will be responsible for accurately providing technical-commercial quotations through the analysis of cost of materials and labor associated with designing, engineering and producing final custom assemblies for our LV/MV Switchgear including paralleling equipment and various control systems. Responsibilities encompass completing quotations/proposals which would include reviewing and interpreting engineered drawings and specifications, working closely with our suppliers and interacting regularly with our sales, engineering, production and purchasing departments.

You will be part of the Inside Sales/Application Engineering team which provides the sales force with support by preparing proposals and quotes. Training will be provided on the estimating tools used to generate the quotations. Minimal travel required.

Requirements: A 4 year college degree and a 2 years of experience* with a solid knowledge of LV/MV Switchgear. Experience doing complex proposals/quotations in a factory environment is essential. Strong problem solving skills, excellent computer, communication and organizational skills are a must. Knowledge of paralleling controls and/or PLC/HMI controls is desired. Experience with Design/Build applications is a plus.
